For Jenna, Warren, Millie and Ashley.

A Promise Kept

At the beginning of the year, when Dee was seriously ill in hospital, we made her a promise: when she was well again, we would all go on a family trip to Mauritius. Through those difficult days, that promise gave us something special to look forward to. Now we get to make those memories together.

A Zilwa catamaran anchored in the lagoon with Coin de Mire island behind it

Possibilities, not a timetable

Out on the lagoon

Snorkelling, kayaks, paddleboards, the glass-bottom boat and a catamaran day.

The nautical hut is open every day. The hotel lists snorkelling and stand-up paddle too, so we'll check what's covered when we get there.

One to do together

Gran Zil

A quick pontoon ride to the hotel's own islet. Barbecue on the sand, hammocks over the water.

Lunch at Gran Zil is on our all-inclusive list. It's a buffet with a picnic bench on the sand and your feet in the water. We'll confirm with the hotel how the days and bookings work.

If we feel like leaving the hotel

Chamarel

The Seven Coloured Earth and the waterfall, on one ticket. A proper day out.

Seven Coloured Earth and the waterfall

Chamarel is in the southwest and we're in the north, so it's a full-day outing. The ticket covers the Geopark, both waterfall viewpoints and the tortoise park.

  • Open 08:30 to 17:30, October to May
  • Rs 800 per adult for non-residents
  • Rupees or card only, no foreign cash
  • Self-guided, up to about two hours

From the park's website. We'd still need to sort transport. Check prices before going.

Closer to home

  • Pamplemousses Botanical Garden: a quieter morning out
  • Goodlands market: local life and something to eat
  • Sunrise in a pirogue: a traditional boat, for anyone willing to get up early

Nothing here is booked yet, and we'd check times and costs first.

Also a valid plan

Or we do nothing

Pool, beach, a long lunch, another swim. We're not filling every day.
